Otters Topple Coyotes, Remain Undefeated

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.
– With a balanced offense, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball notched its eighth victory of the season with a 61-44 win over Cal State San Bernardino in the Coussoulis Arena this afternoon. 

The Otters improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Coyotes (6-1, 2-1) picked up their first loss of the 2010-11 season.

"The deeper you are in the CCAA, the better you are," said head coach #Renee Jimenez#. "I thought we had a great team effort tonight and everyone came in and did their job."

Senior #LaShawn Johnson# had a team-high 12 points, two from beyond the 3-point line.  Senior #London Houchin#, junior #Erika Ward# and sophomore #Holly Holcomb# each contributed 10 points.  Junior #Shonetta Crain-Williams# pulled down a game-high 10 rebound to go along with her six points. Senior #Julie Heurung# added seven boards and classmate #Michelle Santizo# dished out five assists.

Even at 11 with ten minutes into the game, the Otters went on a 27-3 run, including a perfect  4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

CSUMB took a 33-23 lead at the half after shooting 41.4 percent (12-for-29) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from behind the 3-point line.

The Otters stepped up their defense in the second half, holding the Coyotes to a 22.2 field goal percentage.

CSUMB remained steady in the second half, keeping a double-digit lead over the Coyotes.

The Otters won the battle of the boards with a 49-32 advantage, 14 coming on the offensive side.

The Coyotes were led by Angela Streets with 12 points. 

"Anytime you can get a win on the road, it is something to be proud of," Jimenez said.

The Otters play their final game of 2010 on Thursday, Dec. 30 at Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
