MEN'S BASKETBALL
OPENING TIP:
CCAA play continues as CSUMB embarks on its first road trip of the conference season, heading to Los Angeles for contests at CSULA and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Otters open the trip Friday, Jan. 8, tipping off at 7:30 p.m. against the CSULA Eagles at the Eagle Nest. They will then head to Carson to take on the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros Saturday, Jan 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the newly dedicated Dave Yanai Court.

LISTEN TO YOUR OTTERS: All games this year can be heard live on KION Radio (1460 AM) as Rob Ponce returns to the mic for his seventh season of calling the action. Fans can watch the game with the audio broadcast on CSUMB's official athletic website, otteratheltics.com.

PREVIOUS OUTING: The Otters finished the weekend on a positive note, recording a 80-63 conference victory over Sonoma State on Sunday night.  Senior #Shaun Williams# led four players scoring in double figures with 17 points. Senior #Sean Jergo# posted season-highs as he notched his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

CCAA STAT RANKINGS: Against conference opponents, the Otters continue to lead in free throw percentage (75.8) and steals (8.0) while finishing in second in offensive rebounds (36.2).  Freshman #Davion Berry# - 5th in scoring (15.0), 6th in steals (1.6) and 15th in field goal percentage (51.1).  Senior #Sean Jergo# - 1st in rebounding (8.8), 7th in free throw percentage (85.0) 1st in defensive rebounds (6.0), 3rd in offensive rebounds (2.8) and 10th in blocked shots (0.8). Junior #Ian Hosford# - 5th in rebounding (6.4), 4th in defensive rebounds (5.2), 7th in 3-point field goal percentage (46.7) and 13th in 3-point field goals average (1.4). Senior #Kris Jones# - 8th in steals (1.4) and 10th in blocked shots (.8). Senior #Shaun Williams# - 3rd in free throw percentage (93.3).

NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS:
CSUMB is ranked in the top 100 in six categories; 3-point field goal defense (28.3 - 29th), free-throw percentage (73.8 - 30th), field-goal percentage defense (39.6 - 36th), blocked shots per game (3.6 - 86th), steals per game (8.4 - 93rd) and 3-point field goal percentage (35.6 - 98th).  Freshman #Davion Berry# is ranked 136th in steals, averaging 1.9 per game.

THE EAGLES: Cal State L.A. (7-2, 3-1 CCAA) is in a four-way tie for second in the CCAA standing with its lone conference loss to Humboldt State, 77-60, on Dec. 3 in Arcata. The Eagles are ranked third in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to a 34.8 average. Players to Watch: Chris Fields (18.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg); Dwayne Jones (12 ppg, 3.7 rpg.); Carl Hoffman (9.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 53.6 3-pt fg pct). 

THE TOROS:
Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-7, 2-2) travels to CSULA on Wednesday, Jan 6 for a game before taking on the Gators on Friday, Jan 8.  The Toros opened their 2009-10 campaign with a seven-game losing streak before registering a 65-61 win over Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Jan. 2. Player to Watch: John Staats (10.7 ppg, 2.7 3-pt pg); Tim McLaurin (10.0 ppg, 2.1 apg); Tim McGrath (8.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
OPENING TIP:
CSUMB squares off with Cal State L.A. on Friday, Jan. 8 at the Eagle Nest with a 5:30 tip-off.  The Otters travel to Carson on Saturday, Jan 9 to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m.

PREVIOUS OUTING: After posting a strong second half, CSUMB cruised to a 58-49 victory over Sonoma State on Sunday night.  Senior #Helen Suarez# posted 16 points with classmate #Veronica William# adding seven points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior #Julie Heurung# registered 10 points from the post.

CCAA STAT RANKINGS: Against conference opponents, the Otters are ranked 2nd in 3-point field goals made (5.8) and 5th in free throw percentage (92.3). Senior #Veronica# Williams - 7th in scoring (11.8), 2nd in free throw percentage (92.3), 3rd in 3-point field goals average (2.2) and 11th in defensive rebounding (4.8).  Senior #Helen Suarez# - 20th in scoring (9.4), 7th in free throw percentage (81.8) and 12th in steals (1.8). Junior #Michelle Santizo# - 25th in scoring (8.8), 15th in field goal percentage (41.5) and 15th in 3-point field goals average (1.2). Senior #Jazz Herrera# - 19th in rebounding (5.4) and 6th in offensive rebounding (3.0). Junior #Julie Heurung# - 7th in blocked shots (1.2).

NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS: CSUMB is ranked in the top 100 in seven categories: scoring defense (56.7, 31st), 3-point field goal defense (28.6, 77th), won-lost percentage (77.8, 45th) , rebound margin (3.1 - 90th), turnovers per game (18.3, 90th), 3-point field goals per game (6.0, 92nd) and turnover margin (1.78, 99th). Senior #Veronica Williams# is ranked 152nd in 3-point field goals per game (1.9) and senior #Helen Suarez# is 211th in free-throw percentage (74.4).

THE EAGLES: Cal State L.A. (3-7, 1-4 CCAA) dropped its first three conference games before racking up a 68-59 win over Cal State East Bay on Sunday, Jan. 3. The Eagles almost pulled off an upset the night before, falling to No. 14 UC San Diego 65-61. Players to Watch: Jordan Kuzma (9.8 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 1.5 bpg); Jazzi Johnson (9.5 ppg, 63.8 fg pct).

THE TOROS: Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-7, 2-3 CCAA) held a 29-24 lead at the half against No. 14 UC San Diego but eventually fell to the Tritons, 69-64, on Sunday, Jan. 3. The Toros lead the conference in offensive boards, averaging 16.2 per game. Players to Watch: Neka Mixon (16.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg), Whitney Gantt (11.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg); Brandie McCann (11.3 ppg, 86.5 FT pct).
