Strong Second Half Propels Otters To 58-49 Victory Over Sonoma State

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Senior #Helen Suarez# had 16 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay its third California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory, a 58-49 decision against Sonoma State on Sunday night at the Otter Sports Center.

The Otters improved to 7-2 and 3-2 in CCAA play while the Seawolves (5-6, 3-3) picked up their sixth loss of the season. 

Senior #Veronica Williams# notched seven points and a team-high six rebounds.  Junior #Julie Heurung# added 10 points.

"I am really proud of our teams effort tonight, this was a great team win," said head coach #Renee Jimenez#. "We started out slow on offense the first half but our defense really gave a spark in the second half and got us rolling."

After trading leads in the first half, Sonoma State came out on top with a 20-16 lead at the break.

A basket by Heurung five minutes into the second half sparked a 15-4 run, giving the Otters a 46-34 cushion. 

Sonoma State won the battle of the boards (35-30), but CSUMB forced a season-high 27 turnovers.

The Seawolves were led by Jaclyn Bisordi with 12 points and Oly Larkin with ten points.  Christy Shreve pulled down seven rebounds.

"We're going to get some rest, get better this week and prepare to win two tough road games this weekend," Jimenez said.


The Otters begin a four-game road trip on Friday, Jan. 8 against Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
