Last Second Free Throw Sinks Otters

Freshman Davion Berry led Otters with 16 points

SEASIDE, Calif.
– For the fourth time this season, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw another game slip through its fingers, falling to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on Saturday night.

Freshman #Davion Berry# led the Otters with 16 points with nine from the charity stripe. Senior #Sean Jergo# pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds along with eight points.

The Otters shot 26.9 percent in the first half but was only down 25-22 at the break.

CSUMB took a 33-31 lead on a 3-pointer by freshman #Brandon Ward# six minutes into the second half. Senior #Jamelle Tolliver# added a jumper to extend the Otter lead to 35-31. The teams traded leads for the next five minutes with neither team taking a larger lead than three points.

A 9-2 run by the Broncos put them up 50-43 with 3:36 on the clock.

Jergo connected on two free throws to close the gap to five points just under two minutes remaining.  Berry's basket at 39 seconds cut it to 50-47 but a back-end free throw by Pomona's Austin Swift made it four-point game.

In the next 15 seconds, Berry went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. 

A foul with only one second on the clock sent Dwayne Fells to the line.  Fells missed the front end but made the second shot to give the Broncos the 52-51 victory.

In the second half, the Otters shot 47.4 percent (9-19) from the field and 75 percent (9-12) at the charity stripe.

The Broncos we led by Swift with 22 points while Matthew Rosser nabbed seven rebounds.

The Otters hit the road next week, traveling to Chico State on Friday, Jan. 29.  Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
