HAYWARD, Calif. – With every Otter scoring a basket, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team earned its 10th victory of the season with a 82-62 win over Cal State East Bay on Saturday night.
The Otters improve to 10-3 and 6-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while the Pioneers remain winless (0-14, 0-9 CCAA).
“We got off to another slow start tonight, but I thought the team did a great job coming out of halftime focused and ready to win the game,” said head coach #Renee Jimenez#. “Any night everyone can get in the game and score is a great team effort and a huge team win.”
Junior #London Houchin# led the Otters with 16 points, nine from beyond the arc. Senior #Veronica Williams# posted her second consecutive double-double, third on the season, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior #Helen Suarez# dished out six assists along with her nine points. Junior #Julie Heurung# added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Two consecutive baskets by Heurung put the Otters up 15-7 at 13:41. After three CSUMB turnovers, the Pioneers took a 17-15 lead at 9:55. After a 3-pointer by Williams with the shot clock down to two, the Otters retook the lead at 18-17. A layup by Claudia Nelson gave the lead back to the Pioneers.
A 9-2 run by the Otters put them back up 27-21 with 5:41 remaining in the first. A pair of free throws and jumpers by junior
LaShawn Johnson raised the Otter lead to 33-21. The Pioneers answered with an 8-0 run to finish the first half, cutting the Otter lead to 33-29.
CSUMB opened the second half with a 7-0 run capped on a 3-pointer by junior
London Houchin in the 16th minute..
Houchin made a 4-point play to extend CSUMB's lead to 66-48 as the Otters sailed the 82-62 victory.
CSUMB shot a 47.5 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from beyond the arc, second highest of the season. The Pioneers won the battle of the board with 48, with 28 of them coming on the offensive side.
“We had four tough road games the last two weekends and going 3-1 is very tough to do in the CCAA,” Jimenez said. “I'm proud of our team for locking in and getting three huge wins.”
The Otters return home on Friday, Jan 22, hosting the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
