LA JOLLA, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team held on to a 66-62 victory over UC San Diego for its first road victory of the season.

The Otters improved to 5-8 and 3-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while UCSD dropped to 3-8, 2-6 in CCAA action.

“We were able to hit free throws and get stops down the stretch,” said head coach #Rob Bishop#. “That was the difference between tonight and last weekend. We didn't shoot particularly well but we did a great job on defense. I was really proud of our effort. Everyone contributed tonight.”

Senior #Shaun Williams# led CSUMB with 18 points and five steals while freshman #Davion Berry# added 11 points. Senior #Sean Jergo# pulled down nine rebounds with junior #Ian Hosford# following with eight boards.

After five tied scores in the first 10 minutes of play, the Otters pulled head with a 8-0 run topped by a layup by Jergo.  CSUMB took a 33-24 lead into the locker room.

The Tritons battled back to tie the game at the 6:44 minute mark on a layup by Casey Ryan.  He then sank two free throws to give UCSD its first lead of the second half at 53-51.  The teams traded leads for the next two minutes but two free throws by Berry put the Otters up for the final count at 60-59 with 2:16 remaining.  Pairs of free throws by senior Kris Jones, Williams and Hosford sealed the deal for the Otters.

CSUMB forced 16 turnovers while only giving up 10, but lost the battle of the board 47-40.

The Tritons were led by Jordan Lawley with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Otters are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Cal State East Bay in Hayward.  Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
