BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Playing its second nationally ranked team in four days, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team scored a late goal in regulation to lead to a 3-3 double overtime tie with No. 12 Western Washington University in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon at Orca Field on the Whatcom Community College campus.
CSUMB took the lead in the 13th minute as forward #Alyssa Matheson# took a short pass from midfielder #Sarah Alderson# and hit the ball into the upper right corner of the net from 30 feet out.
The Vikings answered three minutes later, as Emily Frankland tapped the ball in on a rebound by Kelly Irving's shot that hit the post.
The Otters regained the lead in the 24th minute as midfielder #Carrie LaPonza# headed home a corner kick by freshman #Ashley Rohde#'s, but once again the Vikings equalized the game in the 36th minute to put the halftime score at 2-2.
Western Washington took its first lead of the game at the 67th minute mark on a goal by senior Jenny Barton.
With 4:02 remaining, the Otters evened the score off Alderson's free kick that hit the post and after a mad scramble in the goal mouth; Rohde poked the ball in from four yards out.
Freshman goalkeeper #Andrea Davis# continued her impressive weekend, recording eight saves.
“The players came together and put together a solid game,” said head coach Artie Cairel. “They really believe in each other and earned a hard fought result.”
After a week off, the Otters (0-2-1) have their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 8, when they welcome the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur University. Kickoff is 12:30 p.m.
