ST. GEORGE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team saw their 2009 season come to an end in a 2-1 loss to UC San Diego at Karl Brooks Field in the NCAA Division II West Regionals.
The Otters outhit the Tritons, 11-7.
UCSD scored their only runs in the first inning on a home run by Jenni Habib after Kristyn Lesovsky drew a walk.
The Otters led off the second innings with back-to-back singles by #Shelair Rowell# and #Niki Ames#. Senior #Rachelle Morales# doubled through the middle to score CSUMB's first run of the game.
CSUMB made a two-out rally in the top of the fourth when Morales and Lopez hit singles. Montez singled to second, but Morales got caught in a run down between third and home.
In the final inning of the game, the Otters laid everything out on the table. Montez led off by reaching first on an error. After Moon put down a sacrifice bunt, Montez tied to score from second on senior #Ashlee Trotter#'s single to right field but was called out on a perfect throw. Sophomore #Shae Olds# came to the plate and hit a double to the gap in left center. Trotter attempted to score but was thrown out for the final out of the game.
In six innings, starting pitcher #Jessica Boyle# allowed six hits and five walks. Senior #Michelle Tating# came in for relief in the seventh, allowing one hit and struck out one batter.
The CSUMB squad (36-27-1) made history last weekend, winning the school's first team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament title after defeating the Tritons 7-3 and Sonoma State 8-0.
