FIRST PITCH:
The CSUMB softball team's impressive run during the three-day Tournament of Champions came to an end Sunday, as the Otters lost 4-8 to Hawaii Pacific in the first game of gold bracket play at Pedretti Park in Turlock. Boosting their overall winning percentage to .600, CSUMB returns home to resume conference play against the Wildcats of Chico State. First game of the weekend series of double headers is scheduled for Friday, April,10, at 1:00 p.m.
NEXT WEEK:
The Otters travel to Turluck, Calif. to battle the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus. First double-header is slotted for 1:00 p.m. on March 17, at the Warrior Softball Field.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS:
Chico State (16-29, 4-20 CCAA) was also a team featured in the previous Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus. The Wildcats were finally topped in the last day of the tournament, defeated by Grand Canyon 5-10. Lauren Walker (7-14) was charged with the loss; the Wildcats piled up a single-game season high 14 hits in the contest, with Gwen Cox going 3-for-4. Cox hit safely in all six games the Wildcats played over the weekend and hit a robust .600 for the tournament.

RODRIGUEZ EARNS THIRD PERFORMANCE ACCOLADE:
Cal State Monterey Bay's #Lucia Rodriguez# earned her third Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association's Softball Player of the Week of the year for the week of March 16-22.The junior outfielder from Rialto, Calif. continued her fine offensive season as she helped the Otters gain a split in their four-game series split with No. 5 regionally-ranked Sonoma State. Rodriguez batted .538 (7-for-13) with six runs, three home runs and seven RBI. She had a 1.231 slugging percentage and .538 on-base percentage.
ROWELL EARNS DUAL RECOGNITION:
Cal State Monterey Bay's #Shelair Rowell# earned two individual accolades after having a spectacular weekend in the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. She was named to the All-Tournament Team and selected as the Worth/CCAA Player of the Week. Rowell tied a tournament record of 16 RBI including a game-high six in the 9-0 victory against Western Oregon on Saturday, April 3. In that game, Rowell hit a walk-off grand slam to end the game early due to the eight-run rule. The Santa Fe Springs native ended the tournament with 11 hits and a .647 batting average. She racked up two doubles, two three-run home runs, and one grand slam. Rowell also produced on the mound, pitching two complete games. In 12 innings, she allowed only two runs for a 1.50 ERA. She struck out 10 batters and gave up only nine hits while walking only three. “Shelly had a great weekend for the Otters,” said Otters head coach
Andrea Kenney. “She pitched well and showed great power. She is one of those athletes that makes softball look easy.”
OTTERS ON RIGHT TRACK:
The CSUMB squad is back on track, going 23-13 since beginning the season with a 2-8-1 record. The Otters are in the top 5 in every CCAA major statistic including first in home runs (45), hits (393) and batters struck out looking (77).
