TURLOCK, Calif. – After posting back-to-back shutouts, the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team ended the day with a 4-2 victory against Northwest Nazarene University in the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Otters earned their 100th victory of the four-year program in a 4-0 shutout against No. 9 regionally-ranked Central Washington.
The Otters opened the tournament with 3-0 win over Western Washington University. CSUMB took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by junior #Shelair Rowell#.
CSUMB added two more insurance runs in the fourth inning. Junior #Lucia Rodriguez# led off with a double to left field and sophomore #Shae Olds# hit a RBI single to right field. Rowell scored senior# Arleen Costas#, who came in to pinch run for Olds, with a double to center field.
Junior #Michelle Tating# got the start for CSUMB and struck out seven batters in her complete game outing.
Against the Wildcats of Central Washington, Rowell hit a three-run blast to over the center field wall to give the Otters a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
CSUMB added another run in the sixth inning when Olds led off with a double down the left field line. Junior #Niki Ames# followed with a RBI single up the middle.
Senior #Jessica Boyle# earned her eighth win and second complete game shutout of the season. She allowed seven hits while striking out five batters.
Rowell continued her team-leading performance into the third game as she took the mound against Northwest Nazarene. She pitched a complete seven-inning game, striking out seven batters, while racking up a team-high two hits at the plate.
In the final game, CSUMB jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Junior #Jennifer Montez# drew a walk and then advanced on second on a passed ball. Freshman #Jamie Moon# hit a RBI single down the right line and scored on a passed ball.
The Otters picked up another run in the fourth inning. With one out, Rowell singled to left center. Costa, pinch running again for Rowell, scored on another Crusaders' pass ball.
Olds scored the final run of the game after she tripled to right field in the sixth inning. Ames hit a RBI ground-ruled double.
The Otters return to the field on Saturday, April 4, at 12:15 p.m. to take on Western Oregon University. CSUMB swept the Wolves, 9-5 and 4-2, on Wednesday, April 1, in Seaside.
