SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay softball squad swept UC San Diego in a CCAA doubleheader on Friday at the Otter Softball Field. The Otters took game one 4-3 and followed it up with a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.
The Otters improved to 20-10 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play and 34-23-1 overall.
Senior third baseman #Ashlee Trotter# led the Otter offense in the opener with two hits. Senior #Jessica Boyle# notched her 14th victory after throwing a complete game, giving up one earned run and striking out four batters.
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the first on a CSUMB error, but the Otter quickly tied it up in their side of the frame on a wild pitch.
UCSD went on top again in the fourth on the Otters' second error of the game, 2-1.
CSUMB came out strong in the fourth by scoring three runs on four hits. Sophomore #Shae Olds# led off with a single down the right field line. Junior #Shelair Rowell# followed with single to left field and both runners advanced on a strikeout by junior #Lucia Rodriguez#. Trotter crushed a 2 RBI double to the gap in left center field. Pinch hitter #Valerie Calderon# doubled to right center to score Trotter and the Otters ended the inning with a 4-2 lead.
UCSD added another run in the sixth on a double by Defazio.
The nightcap remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Otters put up three runs. Rowell and Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles and senior #Rachelle Morales# hit a RBI double up the middle. Senior #Alma Lopez# reached on a UCSD error, scoring Rodriguez and Morales.
Junior #Niki Ames# led off the fifth inning with a ground-rule double to left field. Olds blasted a two-run homer over the left center field to give the Otters a 5-0 lead.
Senior #Michelle Tating# (7-4) pitched 3.2 innings of relief to earn the victory.
Olds recorded her 13th home run of the season and is one away from tying the CCAA record.
The Otters close out their regular season on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m. Following the doubleheader, CSUMB will honor seven seniors. Third baseman #Ashlee Trotter# and pitcher #Jessica Boyle# will be the first four-year players in the CSUMB softball program history. The Otters will also honor #Rachelle Morales#, #Easton Henrickson#, #Michelle Tating#, #Alma Lopez# and #Valerie Calderon#.
