TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters split a doubleheader with the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, falling 1-0 in the opener before winning 6-1 in the night cap.
The opener was a true pitching duel as both teams were deadlocked through six innings of play. Junior #Shelair Rowell# and Warrior senior Jessica Gaumnitz only gave up four hits each. Rowell sat down 10 straight batters in the middle innings.
A CSUMB error gave Stanislaus the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Otters tied it in the fourth on a RBI double by junior #Lucia Rodriguez#.
CSUMB's offense caught fire in the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and a Warrior error. With one out, junior #Jennifer Montez# doubled to right center. Freshman #Jamie Moon# reached first on an error and advanced to third base while Montez scored an unearned run. Rodriguez recorded her second RBI on a single up the middle. Senior #Ashlee Trotter# followed with a 2 RBI single to center field.
The Otters added another run in the sixth inning on Moon's RBI double down the left line.
Senior #Jessica Boyle# recorded her 11th victory of the season, pitching a complete game and striking out six batters.
Montez led the Otters in the victory with three hits and two runs.
The Otters conclude their four-game series against the Warriors on Saturday, April 18 at Warrior Softball Field. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
