SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team recorded their seventh doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday with 10-2 and 2-1 victories over Chico State at the Otter Softball Field.
All four CSUMB pitchers took the mound today with #Shelair Rowell# (4 H, 1 R, 3 SO, 0 BB) and #Michelle Tating# (1 H, 0 R, 3 SO, 1 BB) each pitching four inning and recording victories.
In the opener, CSUMB saw the Wildcats take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Rachel Failla.
The Otters tied the score in the bottom of the first when junior #Niki Ames# singled down the right field line to score senior #Jennifer Montez# who led off the inning with a walk.
Senior #Ashlee Trotter# crushed her eight homer of the season in the second inning to give CSUMB a 2-1 lead. The Otters added two more runs in the inning on singles by freshman #Jamie Moon# and Ames.
Junior #Lucia Rodriguez# hit a RBI double to left field and senior
Rachelle Morales followed with a sacrifice fly to give CSUMB a 6-1 lead.
Back-to-back doubles by Moon and Ames gave the Otters another run. Sophomore #Shae Olds# blasted a two-run home run, her 12th of the season, over the center field wall. After a Wildcats pitching change, Rodriguez doubled to center field and Trotter hit a sacrifice fly to center field to raise CSUMB's lead to 10-1.
The Wildcats added another run in the top of the fifth before recording their third out as the Otters were rewarded the victory on the eight-run rule.
In the nightcap, Chico State once again took a 1-0 lead but this time in the second inning.
The Otters once more tied it in the bottom of the frame on a RBI double to right center by Trotter.
CSUMB scored the deciding run in the fifth inning. Senior #Alma Lopez# hit a single to left field, where Chico State's player misplayed the ball after the bounce and enabled Lopez to reach third base.
“Those were three big wins for us,” said Otters head coach
Andrea Kenney. “#Shae Olds# was clutch this weekend and our pitching was consistent.
“All-in-all, a very good weekend for us.”
Olds stretched her hitting streak to 13-games, just one shy of Trotter's 14-game CSUMB record. However, Olds did tie a Trotter record today when she hit her 12th home run. Trotter set the record her freshman year and nows share the title of single home run record holder with Olds.
The Otters return to Turlock for the third time this season, but this time taking on the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Their final road series begins on Friday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
