FIRST PITCH:
After losing the series to Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3) last weekend, the Otters return home to compete against Cal State San Bernardino. CSUMB will look to improve their CCAA record in the first two double header games. The Otters than compete in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Otter Softball Field.

NEXT WEEK:
CSUMB ventures to Rohnert Park, Calif. to play in the Seawolves Invitational. First game is scheduled against Sonoma State on Fri, March 13 at 11 a.m. The other teams to also be showcased in the tournament are: Chico State and Grand Canyon University.

SCOUTING THE COYOTES:
Cal State San Bernardino (9-11, 4-4 CCAA) is coming off a victory after recently splitting with University Hawaii-Hilo 1-1. In the series held on Feb. 23, the Vulcans and Coyotes were tied 1-1 after four innings, but UHH got to CSUSB starter Maggie Karros with four runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. UHH added what proved to be the winning run in the sixth. The Coyotes rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh but UHH's pitcher, Christine Pedroza ,in relief of Amber Waracka, earned the save by getting the third out with the tying and winning runs on second and third. Players to watch: Priscilla Curiel (.278 avg, 11 RBI, 2 HR, 2 3B); Ashley Collinwood (.259 avg, 7 RBI, 3 HR, 1 2B); Courtney Wilhelms (.342 avg, 8 RBI, 4 2B).

#Ashley Trotter# - 4th in average (.390), 6th in runs scored (10), 2rd in hits (23), 4rd in RBI (11), tied 2nd in HR (4).

#Shelair Rowell# - 4th in RBI (11), 5th in HR (3), 6th in innings pitched (50.2),  5th in batters SO (29), 2nd in wins (5).

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS - DAY ONE:
Two homeruns lifted the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opener of its doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 27, at Toro Diamond. The Otters took game one, 2-1 before the Toros posted a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. Shortstop #Niki Ames# homered in the first inning to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.  The Toros tied the game in the third inning on four hits. Last week's Worth/CCAA Player of the Week #Lucia Rodriguez# blasted a home run over the left field wall in the fifth inning to give the Otters a 2-1 victory. Junior #Shelair Rowell# picked up the complete-game victory, striking out three in seven innings while allowing just one earned run.  Rowell improved her record to 5-2 overall and 3-0 against CCAA opponents. In the second game, CSUMB jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a RBI single by Ames and two CSUDH errors. CSUDH scored a run in its frame on two CSUMB errors.  The Toros rallied in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 win. Ames (4-6) and Rodriguez (3-6) led the Otters, each recording a home run and a double.


CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS - DAY TWO:
The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team saw its early leads fall away in both games of the doubleheader against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Toro Diamond. The final scores were 5-2 and 5-3. Sophomore #Shae Olds# led the Otters offense, going 4-for-5 with two runs batted in. Senior #Ashlee Trotter# was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. In game one, junior #Lucia Rodriguez# reached on a fielder choice and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Trotter singled to put runners on the corners and senior #Valerie Calderon# hit a single up the middle to score the first run of the game in the second inning. Trotter's single in the fourth inning drove in Rodriguez to give the Otters a 2-0 advantage. The Toros did what proved to be the game-winning damage in the sixth inning, putting five runs on the board. In the series closer, the Otters began the first inning with the bases loaded after two CSUDH errors and hit by pitch. Olds singled through the left side to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. The Toros tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning. Junior #Jennifer Montez# and Trotter singled in the third inning, before Olds singled to center field to retake the lead, 2-1.  The Otters added another run on junior Shelair Rowell's sacrifice fly to right field. The Toros tied the game in their side of the frame, 2-2.CSUDH scored the winning run while adding two insurance runs in the fourth inning on two hits and a CSUMB error. Rowell (5-3) and senior Jessica Boyle (2-4) picked up the losses. 

COMMENTS BY COACH KENNEY:

On CSUDH games: “The games in Carson were hard fought. Both teams made mistakes CSUDH did a better job capitalizing on the errors we made.”

On upcoming games: “We are still in a great position to make the playoffs. After a month on the road, all of us are eager to spend some time on our home field.”

RODRIGUEZ NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Junior #Lucia Rodriguez# was named CCAA player of the week Feb. 23, 2009. The junior outfielder from Rialto, Calif., enjoyed a productive week at the plate as she helped the Otters to a four-game road CCAA sweep at San Francisco State. Rodriguez batted .467 (7-for-15), had a pair of doubles, home run, scored three runs and had five RBI. She collected two multiple-hit games while posting an .800 slugging percentage and .467 on-base percentage.
