SEASIDE, Calif. – Junior #Lucia Rodriguez# went 7-for-8 and crushed three home runs for the day as the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team pulled off a 12-3, five inning victory over Sonoma State in game one before dropping the nightcap 11-8 despite a seventh inning rally.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Rodriguez singled to left field right over the third baseman. The Otters loaded the bases after sophomore #Shae Olds# and junior #Niki Ames# were both hit by pitches. Sonoma State walked in the first CSUMB run. Senior #Ashlee Trotter# hit a 2 RBI single down the left field line to give the Otters a 3-0 lead.
Junior #Jennifer Montez# and freshman #Jessica Moon# hit back-to-back singles to begin the second inning. Rodriguez hit her first home run, a three-run blast over left field wall. Trotter notched her third RBI on a single to third base to extend CSUMB lead to 7-0.
The third inning looked like a repeat of the second when Montez and Moon each reached on singles. A walk earned by Olds loaded the bases for Ames to hit a 2 RBI single up the middle. Trotter once again came through for the Otters with a RBI single to make it 10-0.
The Seawolves came alive in the fourth inning scoring three runs on five hits to make it 10-3.
A two-run homer by Rodriguez gave the Otters a five-inning victory due to the eight-run rule.
Junior #Shelair Rowell# took the win after pitching three innings and striking out three. Trotter was perfect at the plate (3-for-3) with four RBI.
In game two, the Otters took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Ames hit a 2 RBI double to left center. Sonoma State tied the game in the second on Ashley Britton's RBI double and Brittany Williams' fielder choice.
CSUMB retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning on Rodriguez's third home run of the day, making it 3-2.
Sonoma State scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a 2 RBI single by Kyla Ledford.
The Otters added a run in the fifth on Rodriguez's single up the middle.
The Seawolves scored a run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Ledford then hit her first collegiate home run to score two more runs to give Sonoma State a 7-4 lead.
Ashley Sardina hit a grand slam over the left field wall to extend the Seawolves lead to 11-4.
The Otters came out strong in the final frame, beginning with Montez drawing a walk. Moon and Rodriguez both singled to load the bases with no outs on the board. Olds hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to score Montez and Moon. After a fly out to center field, Rowell singled to left field to load the bases once again. Rodriguez scored the final Otter run on a ground out by Trotter.
Montez went 2-for-3 in the second game with three runs.
The Otters (18-20-1, 12-8 CCAA) hosts Western Oregon on Wednesday in a non-conference match-up at the Otter Softball Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is 1 p.m.
