SEASIDE, Calif. – Sophomore #Shae Olds# crushed her ninth home run of the season to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to a 5-0 shutout over Sonoma State in the CCAA four-game series opener on Friday at the Otter Softball Field. The Otters fell 2-1 in the nightcap.
CSUMB is now 17-19-1 overall and 11-7 in conference action. The Seawolves, who are ranked fifth in the first NCAA West Region Poll of the season, move to 18-14 overall and 10-11 in CCAA action.
In the opener, Olds connected on a solo homer off the first pitch of the second inning to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. Junior #Jennifer Montez# blasted a two-run home run down the left line in the fifth inning to extend the Otters lead. In CSUMB's last at bat, junior #Shelair Rowell# added two more runs, a two-out 2 RBI single through the left side.
Senior #Jessica Boyle# recorded her sixth victory of the season, pitching a two-hit complete game with four strikeouts.
CSUMB jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap. Montez doubled to right field and junior #Niki Ames# hit a RBI single. Ames scored on a Sonoma State error.
The Seawolves scored their first run of the day in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Martinez.
Sonoma State's Kayla Ledford hit the game winning 2 RBI single in the seventh inning with two outs.
The Otters and Seawolves close out the four-game series on Saturday, March 28 with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
