ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team recorded a 8-3 victory over Grand Canyon University before falling 3-2 in eight innings to Chico State on the second day of the Seawolf Invitational on Saturday.
In the opener, #Jessica Boyle# nabbed her fifth victory of the season, striking out six batters in seven innings and allowing just three earned runs.
GCU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Otters quickly answered with two runs in the top of the second. #Shae Olds# hit a RBI single to center field and #Niki Ames# scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a single.
The Antelopes retook the lead in their frame with two runs off three hits.
Four runs in the top of the fourth gave the Otters the final lead. #Jennifer Montez# hit a two-RBI double to right field. #Rachelle Morales# followed with a single to left field to score Montez. #Lucia Rodriguez# blasted a double to center field to plate Morales.
The Otters added two more runs in the seventh for a five-run cushion. Rodriguez hit her second double to lead off and Ames brought her across the plate with a single to right field. #Ashlee Trotter# hit a double to score Ames.
CSUMB outhit GCU 13-7.
In the nightcap against Chico State, the Otters jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out RBI single by Morales.
The Wildcats tied the game in the fifth on a CSUMB error.
Chico State's Charlotte Honciano hit a two-out single to center in the eighth inning to take the 2-1 victory.
CSUMB wrap up the Sonoma Invitational on Sunday, March 15, with games against Grand Canyon University and, Sonoma State. The Otters and Antelopes will open with an 11 a.m. first pitch, followed by a contest against the Seawolves at 3 p.m.
