SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team fell, 81-72, to the Seawolves of Sonoma State on Saturday at the Otters Sports Center.
The Otters drop to 13-8 overall and 7-7 in CCAA action.
Senior #Steve Monreal# led the Otters with 23 points and four assists. Senior #Dante Green# scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half. Senior #Joe Mitchell had a team-high nine rebounds on top of his 13 points. Senior #Jose Sanchez# added 11 points.
Junior #Sean Jergo# got things started for the Otters with a layup within seconds into the game. The Seawolves answered with a 3-pointer by Casey McRoberts from the baseline.
At 13:59, Sanchez hit a 3-pointer from beyond the NBA line to close in on the Seawolves lead to 13-12.
After Green's dunk at 17-17, the Seawolves pulled away and took a 42-32 lead into the locker room.
Green's 10-point run closed the lead to within four, 60-56, at 7:52.. After a layup by Kyle Shandera, Sanchez connected on the frontend of his free throw to keep the Otters within five at 62-57. A three-pointer by Mike Nelson distanced the lead to 65-59.
Three consecutive 3-pointers by Monreal at with 35.1 seconds remaining closed the lead again to within four with made it 78-72. James Sandoval made both free throws and Ben Washington added another to clinch the victory for the Seawolves.
McRoberts led the Seawolves with 20 points.
CSUMB outrebounded Sonoma State, 29-25.
The Otters host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
