SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team fell, 73-64,to the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State on Friday at the Otter Sports Center.
With the loss, the Otters are now 13-7 overall and 7-6 in CCAA play. HSU improves to 17-6 and 10-3 in the CCAA action.
Senior #Jose Sanchez# led the Otters with 15 points, with three from beyond the arc. Senior #Steve Monreal# added 13 points and seven assists. Senior #Joe Mitchell# also contributed 13 points on top of his team-high seven rebounds.
Junior #Keith Wilson# stole the ball after the Lumberjacks won the tip-off, and Sanchez dunk the ball for the first basket of the game. The Jacks answered by scoring six straight points before Sanchez sunk a 3-pointer at 16:32.
The Otters went on an 8-0 run, beginning with a steal by Mitchell who dished the ball to junior #Trevor Ray# for a 3-pointer at 14:16.
Monreal's 3-pointer at 5:09 put the Otters up 23-20, but the Jacks responded quickly with a trey of their own from Mike Kehrig.
Both teams traded leads for the remaining five minutes of the first half with Humboldt take a 31-29 advantage into the locker room.
The Jacks opened up the second half with a 19-7 run, four of the baskets from beyond the arc, to take a 50-36 lead at 14:41.
The Otters scored on an alley-oop by senior #Dante Green# that was dished out by Monreal at 12:42. Monreal followed it up with two layups and two free throws after an HSU player was called on a technical to close the lead to 54-45.
CSUMB attempted to claw its way back, but the Jacks prevailed by taking a 73-64 victory.
The Jacks outshot CSUMB 46.7 percent to 30.9 percent from the field.
The Otters welcome the Seawolves of Sonoma State on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Otter Sports Center.
