LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team dropped a 72-65 decision to UC San Diego on Saturday at RMAC Arena.
Senior #Jose Sanchez# led the Otters with 14 points and senior #Steve Monreal# followed with 13 points. Senior #Joe Mitchell# recorded his eighth double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior #Dante Green# added 10 points and nine rebounds.
With the loss, the Otters remain tied for sixth place with San Francisco State University in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
UCSD held a 40-29 lead at the break.
Monreal hit back-to-back threes and Mitchell scored in the paint to bring the Otters to within three, 40-37, to begin the second stanza.
The Otters kept battling back, never allowing UCSD to get comfortable in their lead.
A 9-2 Otter run cut the deficit to just four with 32 seconds to play, but UCSD free throws sealed the seven-point win for the Tritons.
CSUMB's defense held the Tritons to a 22.7 field goal percentage in the second half.
CSUMB (14-11, 8-10 CCAA) returns to the Otters Sports Center to wrap up the regular season next week against Cal State San Bernardino (Feb. 26) and Cal Poly Pomona (Feb. 27). Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
