OPENING TIP:
The Otters compete in their final road games of the regular season, taking on the Gators of San Francisco State Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. and the Tritons of UC San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 21 also at 5:30 p.m. at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, CA.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Otters return to the Kelp Bed to host Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. In this homstead, CSUMB will honor the seniors in a short recognition ceremony prior to tip-off.
SCOUTING THE GATORS:
San Francisco State (12-11, 6-10 CCAA) is currently in the 8th spot in the CCAA standings. In the previous games, the Gators split at home with a dominate win over visiting CSULA 69-43. The following night, SFSU could not stop the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 44-52 loss. Players to watch: Desiree Butler (11.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 70.1 free throw percentage, 37 steals), Zalisha Oliver (7.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 72.5 free throw percentage), Donisha Tate (6.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 65 offensive rebounds), Dominique Hunter (6.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 33 blocks).
SCOUTING THE TRITONS:
UC San Diego (22-3, 15-1 CCAA) suffered their first conference loss and broke a 15-game winning streak after falling short to Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes upended the 13th slot nationally ranked UC San Diego, 64-59, on Saturday, Feb. 14, at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons were held to just 35.0 field goal percentage for the game. Players to watch: Michelle Osier (15.9 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 59 steals, 71.7 free throw percentage, 20 blocks), Chelsea Carlisle (13.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 63 assists, 30 steals, 81.3 free throw percentage), Alexis Gaskin (12.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 59 offensive rebounds), Annette Ilg (10.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 61 assists, 41 steals).
OTTERS BREAK INTO NATIONAL STATISTICS:
CSUMB finds itself ranked 109th in the nation in free throw percentage (70.8). Individually, junior #Helen Suarez# is in the national top 100 in assists per game (4.5, 51st). Senior #Dana Andrews# is ranked 113th after averaging 15.7 points per game.
AGAINST CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS:
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team dropped a 69-48 decision to the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Otters Sports Center. Senior #Dana Andrews# and junior #Helen Suarez# led the Otters with 11 points apiece. Senior #Aly Tsuchiyama# pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
AGAINST CAL STATE L.A..:
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team lost its second game in a week by under five points as the Otters fell, 67-63, to the visiting Eagles of Cal State L.A. on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Otters Sports Center. Junior #Janet Oseguera# led the Otters, recording her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Oseguera was also perfect at the charity stripe, going 9-for-9. Junior #Helen Suarez# dished out a game-high six assists while recording three steals. Senior #Dana Andrews# added 18 points and nine rebounds.
ANDREWS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT:
Showing off her academic talent, #Dana Andrews# was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American District VIII Women's Basketball College Division team last week. She was a first-team selection and is now eligible for the national team which will be announced at the end of February. Andrews is pursuing a bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis in marketing. Named to the Dean's list six times and appearing on the All-CCAA Women's Basketball Academic team twice, Andrews shows her versatility on and off the court.
SUAREZ SMOOTH IN THE CCAA:
Junior #Helen Suarez# broke her four-game streak of scoring 20-plus points, with only scoring a combined 21 points in the two previous games. Suarez is averaging 15.5 ppg, which lands her 5th in the conference rankings. Also in those rankings, Suarez is in 2nd place in steals (2.5), 1st in assists per game (4.6) and 5th in free throw percentage (74.6).
MAKING HISTORY:
The Otters are currently sitting in second in the CCAA with a 70.8 free throw percentage. In a total of 22 games, CSUMB has tallied 334 free throws out of 472.
