MEN'S BASKETBALL
OPENING TIP: For the first time in school history, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team will be competing against NCAA Division I Long Beach State as a regular season game. The Otters take on the 49ers on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4:05 p.m.
LISTEN TO YOUR OTTERS: All games this year can be heard live on KION Radio (1460 AM) as Rob Ponce returns to the mic for his seventh season of calling the action with John Berlin on color. Fans can also watch a live webcast with the audio broadcast on CSUMB's official athletic website, otteratheltics.com.
PAST WEEKEND: CSUMB opened its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season with a 73-67 overtime victory against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Dec. 4 at the Otter Sports Center. The Otters dropped a 74-73 decision against Chico State the following night.
BERRY EARNS CCAA POW HONORS: Freshman #Davion Berry# was named CCAA Player of the Week after averaging 23.5 points and 2.5 rebounds against Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State. Berry shot 71.4 percent (15-for-21) from the field and 93.3 percent (14-for-15) from the foul line. The Otters rode Berry to a CCCA-opening win over Cal State Stanislaus as he hit a jumper with 28 second remaining to force overtime then made two free throws in the extra period that clinched a 73-67 victory. He finished the game with 17 points, two rebounds, an assist and steal. In a 74-73 loss to Chico State on Saturday, Berry scored a game-high 30 points on nine of 12 shooting (75.0 percent) from the field and 10 of 11 (90.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
COACH BISHOP'S CORNER: “This week we play Long Beach state, a very good Division I team out of the Big West. They just beat UCLA and are playing Texas Tuesday. This game will be one that we really look to improve on our offensive spacing and ball movement. We have become a little too reliant on the dribble and need to get back to moving the ball more to open things up for us. It will be a good chance for us to bounce back after last Saturday's tough loss to Chico.”
THE 49ERS: The Long Beach State 49ers (4-4) fell to No. 17 Texas, 107-74, on Dec. 7 in Austin. The 49ers wrapped up the 76 Classic! tournament with a 79-68 victory over basketball powerhouse UCLA on Nov. 29. Players to Watch: T.J. Robinson, 15.9 ppg, 10.3 rpg; Larry Anderson, 12.6 ppg, 4.2 apg.; Casper Ware, 11.1 ppg, 5.1 apg.
