SEASIDE, Calif. – Freshman #Davion Berry#'s 30 points was not enough as the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team fell 74-73 to Chico State on Saturday night in conference action.
The Otters drop to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Wildcats improve to 3-1, 2-0 in CCAA action.
"This was a tough one tonight," said head coach #Rob Bishop#. "We wasted a really good first half and a big lead.
"We can not lose at home if we want to contend for a league title."
Junior #Ian Hosford# scored nine points and five rebounds with senior #Sean Jergo# added seven points and six rebounds.
A 10-point run consisting of two three-pointers by Berry and one by freshman #Nick Scheible# gave the Otters a 29-19 lead. CSUMB held the cushioned lead to the break, 50-33.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a 17-7 run to make it a six-point game (57-51) at the first media time.
A layup by Chico State's Jason Conrad tied the game at 58-58 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Sophomore
Andrew Castro made an old-fashion three-point play to give the lead back to the Otters, 61-58.
CSUMB would hold on to the lead until Jay Flores sunk a three-pointer to make it 64-63 Wildcats.
The lead would change six more times in the final seven and half minutes with the Wildcats coming out on top, 74-73.
Both teams recorded 26 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
The Wildcats were led by Pellum with 24 points with Jon Baird adding 11 points.
"We will regroup and learn from this game and get ready for Long Beach State," Bishop said. "We are still in the learning stages of this young season and we will learn from our mistakes."
The Otters travel to Long Beach on Saturday, Dec. 12 to take on NCAA Division I Long Beach State. Tip-off is at 4:05 p.m.
