SEASIDE, Calif. – Junior #Ian Hosford#'s three-pointer capped a 15-4 Otter run to tie the game but Marquel Hoskins's last second jumper lifted the San Francisco State Gators to a 60-58 victory over the Cal State Monterey Otters in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action on Tuesday night.
For the second time this season, the Otters saw the game slip away from them with a last second shot. On Saturday, Dec. 5, CSUMB fell to Chico State on a three-pointer by Jay Flores for a 64-63 decision.
CSUMB dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in CCAA action while the Gators improved to 9-2 overall, 2-1 in conference.
Freshman #Davion Berry# led the Otters, scoring all his 10 points in the first half. Senior #Shaun Williams# finished with eight points and senior #Keith Wilson# added seven. Hosford recorded a team-high seven rebounds and three assists.
“This was another tough one at home,” said head coach #Rob Bishop#. “We need to understand that as a team we have to play hard for 40 minutes. We could do nothing right on offense in the first half and that coupled with a lackluster defensive effort killed us.”
The Gators held a 38-25 lead at half after shooting 48.3 percent from the field.
Wilson's old fashion three-point play at 3:24 sparked a 10-1 run that consisted of a three-pointer and two free throws by Williams.
The Gators spread out their offense with freshman Nefi Perdomo leading the pack with 10 points.
“I was proud of how we hung in there and battled back in the second half,” Bishop said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win and it just didn't go our way.
“Now we have to get ready for this weekend. “
CSUMB continues its homestand on Saturday, Jan. 2, hosting Humboldt State at the Kelp Bed. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
