MEN'S BASKETBALL
OPENING TIP: The Otters kickoff their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule this weekend, hosting Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
LISTEN TO YOUR OTTERS: All games this year can be heard live on KION Radio (1460 AM) as Rob Ponce returns to the mic for his seventh season of calling the action with John Berlin on color. Fans can also watch a live webcast with the audio broadcast on CSUMB's official athletic website, otteratheltics.com.
PREVIOUS OUTINGS : CSUMB dropped both games at the Seattle Pacific Sodexo Tip-Off Classic. The Otters fell 72-58 to Western Washington on Friday, Nov. 11 before losing to No. 24 Seattle Pacific, 88-70, on Saturday, Nov. 22. Senior
Keith Wilson led the Otter pack, averaging 12.0 points while freshman
Davion Berry recorded 11.0 point per game.
COACH BISHOP'S CORNER: “We are very excited to kick off our league season at home again this year. It is really early to start playing league games but with such a big league we don't really have any choice. We are facing a very guard oriented and athletic team in Stanislaus on Friday night who has a new coach and a new system. They will try and press early to speed the game up and see if they can force us into making mistakes. If we can handle the pressure and get the ball inside we should be able to take advantage of our size.
On Saturday night Chico comes to town. Chico plays a very intense pressure defense in the half court and can really disrupt what teams want to do on offense. We will need to maintain our poise on offense and take advantage when they over extend their defense. Both of these teams this weekend present unique challenges for our young team. I am confident that we will be ready to play and I am looking forward to this weekend.”
THE WARRIORS: Under the new direction of head coach Larry Reynolds, Cal State Stanislaus has kicked off the season with a 4-0 record with victories over three NAIA schools (Menlo, Cal State Maritime, Bethany) and a non-affiliated team (American Sports Academy). Players to Watch: senior forward Jordan Stokes 13.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg; senior forward Matt Ibewiro, 12.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg; senior guard Chad Johnson 9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg.
THE WILDCATS: Chico State (1-1) hosted the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational over Thanksgiving break. The Wildcats recorded a 74-62 victory over Lewis & Clark before falling to Seattle Pacific, 65-44, the tournament finale. Players to Watch: junior forward Terence Pellum 12.0 ppg, 63.2 three-point average; senior guard Jon Baird 10.5 ppg; junior forward Rodrick Hawkins 9.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg.
