TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team became the first visiting team to knock off Cal State Stanislaus in its brand new Warrior Stadium, shutting out the Warriors 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Otters scored single goals in each half to end the Warriors' home unbeaten streak of six games with the victory.
With the win, CSUMB moves to 2-7-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as the Warriors fall to 6-5-1, 3-5-1 in CCAA action.
Both of CSUMB's goals came via corner kicks. The lone shot in the first half proved be enough Otters as they took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Freshman #Trevor Randall# served a corner kick to the far side of the field to junior #Grant Robson#, who sent the ball right into heavy traffic in front of the goal. Freshman #Gabe Glass# headed the ball over the Warriors goalkeeper.
In the 58th minute, senior #Riley Johns# fired a point-blank shot from in front of the goal to give the Otters a 2-0 lead. The loose ball inside the goalkeeper box was a result of another CSUMB corner kick.
"The team united and responded with a spirited effort," said head coach #Artie Cairel#. "A well deserved victory and something to build upon for the remaining home games."
Both teams took eight corner kicks apiece in the game, including 12 total in the first half alone. The Warriors outshot Cal State Monterey Bay 22-7, but Otters goalkeeper #Brenden Baca# made six saves to preserve the shutout.
The Otters begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 7, against non-conference opponent Brigham Young University Hawaii at 3 p.m.
