LOS ANGELES – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team went 6-for-8 at the charity stripe in the last 30 seconds to clinch a 61-59 victory over Cal State L.A. on Friday, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match-up.
The win improved CSUMB's overall record to 8-3 and 3-2 in CCAA play. CSULA fell to 1-11 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Otters opened the second half with a 13-6 to extend their lead to 39-28, but the Golden Eagles answered with an 8-0 run. CSULA took its first lead of the second half on a layup by Jazzi Johnson and held it for two minutes.
Senior #Dana Andrews# made her first field goal of the game at 2:26, closing CSULA's lead to one (54-53). After a CSULA missed shot, Andrews drew a foul on the rebound and proceeded to sink both free-throws, giving the Otters a 55-54 lead. CSULA's Amber Whittington nabbed an old-fashioned three-pointer as the Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead at 57-55.
Cassie Suffolk extended the CSULA's lead to 59-55 with a layup with 39 seconds left. Freshman #Devin Riezebos# connected on the back-end of her free throws with 30 seconds on the clock. A steal by senior #Aly Tsuchiyama# set up Andrews to draw a foul for another trip to the foul line. After Andrews' made free throws, junior #Helen Suarez# stole the ball on CSULA's next possession. It was junior #Lyndsay Trout#'s turn to make a trip to the charity stripe and made both to propel CSUMB into the lead at 60-59. Andrews made the front-end of her free throws with three seconds left to secure the victory.
Suarez led the Otters with 14 points and four steals. Junior #Janet Oseguera# and Trout scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Andrews pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds and scored seven of her nine points in the last two-and-half minutes.
CSUMB limited the Golden Eagles to 20 percent shooting from the field in the first half and took a 26-20 lead into the lock room.
"We got a lot of things we need to work on, but our heart and our fight is not two of them," said Otters head coach
Renee Jimenez. "I will take those two over any skill, and that is why we continue to win games."
The Otters will wrap up their four-game road series on Saturday, facing Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m.
