CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team registered first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) sweep with a 78-71 victory over Chico State on Saturday at Acker Gym.
With the victory, the Otters improve to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in CCAA play. The Wildcats drop to 6-13 and 3-9 in CCAA action.
Senior #Steve Monreal# scored a game-high 25 points on top of four assists and four steals. Senior #Jose Sanchez# finished with 11 points. Junior #Trevor Ray# and sophomore #Warren Freeman# added 10 points apiece. Senior #Joe Mitchell# pulled down 10 rebounds.

Rob Bishop. “They were mentally ready to play.
“Monreal, Mitchell, and Sanchez came up huge tonight and that is what seniors do.”
Andy Bocian made a jumper that staked Chico State to a 69-66 lead with three minutes remaining. Mitchell scored on a tip-in with two minutes left to cut the lead to one, and then Monreal went coast-to-coast to draw a foul on a heady play with 1:33 remaining, and by sinking both foul shots, put the Otters ahead to stay.
CSUMB built the lead to 72-69 after Mitchell made two free throws following another Chico State turnover. The Wildcats missed back-to-back free throws while Monreal made four straight in a seven-second span to clinch the victory.
Bocian, the CCAA leading scorer, led the Wildcats with 21 points. Chico State's senior Justin Argenal broke the CCAA's 28-year-old career assist record finishing the night with eight dimes, enough to pass Jim Schultz, who played at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo from 1979-81.
“We knew this was a huge game for them as well as us,” Bishop said. “They are fighting for a playoff spot and needed a win as bad as us. They battled to the end, but we were just able to make some key shots and free throws.”
After playing eight of their last 10 games on road, the Otters are anxious to return back home on Friday, Feb. 5. CSUMB hosts Humboldt State at the Otter Sports Center with a 5:30 p.m. start time.

assists record with his fifth one of the night and 541st of his career.
It came on Roderick Hawkins' 3-pointer. The record was held by Jim Shultz of
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and came in Argenal's 100th career game.
