ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team were handed its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference loss of the season, falling 77-71 to Humboldt State on Saturday, Jan. 3.
With the loss, the Otters fall to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA, while the Lumberjacks improved to 10-4 and 3-1 in league play.
CSUMB led the lead throughout the first half, taking a 36-32 advantage into the locker room.
After taking their first lead of the evening at 41-40 with 16 minutes left, the Lumberjacks held an advantage the rest of the way. HSU went on a 12-3 run to make a 13 point cushion.
Senior #Stephen Becker#'s three-pointer with 2:45 left on the clock sparked a CSUMB comeback. The Otters trimmed the advantage down to two points on senior #Jose Sanchez#'s jumper, but Elliot Babcock-Krenk hit a free throw and Zac Tiedeman made two more to clinch the victory in the waning seconds.
Senior #Joe Mitchell# registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior #Keith Wilson# added 17 points off the bench.
The Otters only committed 11 turnovers, tying a season-low while forcing 16 turnovers. HSU shot 52.1 percent from the floor and 63.2 percent from beyond the three-point line. CSUMB registered 40.6 percent from the field and 24.0 percent from the arc.
Keith Davis paced the Lumberjacks with 13 points. Ernie Spade and Kevin Atkins each contributed 10 points.
"Tonight is a great example of how hard it is to win games in this league on the road," said Otter head coach Rob Bishop. "I give Humboldt a ton of credit, they came out and played harder than us in the second half."
"I give our guys credit though for they battled back to give themselves a chance."
The Otters head to south on Friday, Jan. 9 to take on the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A.
