Rohnert Park, Calif. – Junior #Helen Suarez# scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made a key steal down the stretch to help the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team beat Sonoma State 61-57 on Friday, Jan 2.
With the win, CSUMB improves to 7-2 and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Junior #Denelle Baker#'s first basket of the game, a three-pointer bank shot, tied the game at the 2:40 mark. Baker struck again, nailing a three from the baseline as the Otters took their first lead of the second half, 57-54.
Sonoma State held a 29-22 lead at the break and led by as much as 11 points in first half.
Junior #Janet Oseguera# posted 13 points and freshman #Devin Riezebos# added 12 points and seven boards.
Olivia Larkin led the Seawolves with 12 points and seven rebounds.
"We talked a lot about having toughness while playing on the road and we showed it in the second half," said Otter head coach Renee Jimenez. "Got some strong stops on defense, but in the end it was the toughness that got the job done tonight."
“I am really proud of this team and the determination they had to stay after it and win the game.”
The Otters travel farther north to Arcata, California where the squad will take on the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State University at the Lumberjack Arena. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
