SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team were unable to overcome a late run by No. 25 UC San Diego, falling to the first-place CCAA Tritons on Friday, at the Otter Sports Center.
Junior #Helen Suarez# scored a game-high 22 points and seven assists. Senior #Dana Andrews# added 12 points.
Andrews sparked the Otters offense, scoring the first five points for CSUMB. Baskets by Suarez and junior #Lindsay Trout# put the Otters up 13-8 in the opening five minutes.
The Tritons answered by going on a 10-2 run.
Suarez cut UCSD's lead to 27-23 on a jumper from the baseline at 8:20, but three consecutive baskets by Alexis Gaskin gave the Tritons a 33-23 cushion.
Sophomore #LaShawn Johnson# hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the Triton's lead at 4:30.
UCSD held a 37-31 advantage at the intermission.
A basket by junior #Janet Oseguera# and Suarez's two free throws closed the lead to 37-35 to open the second half.
From that point, the Tritons went on a 23-4 run to take a commanding lead.
The Otter once again staged a rally by going on a 10-3 run in the final five points, but the clock was not their friend.
CSUMB was perfect at the free throw line, going 10-for-10.
Four Tritons scored double figures as they outrebounded CSUMB, 39-24.
“I believe the team showed a fantastic effort for UCSD is a great team and are a load to handle,” said Otters head coach
Renee Jimenez. “We flipped a switch tonight because everybody on our team was fighting, scrapping and forcing turnovers.
“I couldn't be prouder.”
The Otters close out the month of January on the road, beginning with Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
