SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw their eight-game home winning streak come to an end, falling to UC San Diego, 71-61, on Friday at the Otter Sports Center.
Junior #Sean Jergo# led the Otters with 14 points, 8-for-9 at the charity stripe. Seniors #Joe Mitchell# and #Jose Sanchez# both added nine points each. Mitchell had a team-high ten rebounds.
The Tritons took a quick 6-0 lead, beginning with a dunk by Shane Poppen.
UCSD raced out to a 15-point cushion. Led by Sanchez's five point run, the Otters rallied back to cut the lead to nine right before the halftime break, 37-28.
Jergo scored six of his eight first half points at the charity stripe.
The Otters connected on three consecutive 3-pointers to open the second half, with Monreal making two and junior #Keith Wilson# recording the final one. At 12:20, sophomore #Warren Freeman# scored an old-fashioned 3-pointer to close the lead to 44-40.
Another large run by the Tritons put them up 51-43.
Two free throws by Jergo cut the Triton's lead to 53-48 at 7:17.
Mitchell broke a two-and-half minute scoring drought with an old-fashioned 3-pointer, 53-51. Sanchez slashed to the basket to tie the score at 4:18.
Triton's Darryl Lawlor hit a trey, but Jergo answered with a lay-in on their next possession, 56-55 UCSD.
Lawlor hit the front-end of his two free throws, and Jergo tied it again, 57-57.
Tritons pulled away again at the end, making seven free throws to put a stomp on the Otters comeback.
“Hats off to UC San Diego,” said Otters head coach
Rob Bishop. “They were ready to go and we weren't.
“Now we need to get ready to go back on the road again.”
CSUMB (11-4, 5-3 CCAA) takes to the road for four-games to wrap-up the month of January. First stop is at Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 20.
