SEASIDE, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team extended their eight-game home winning streak, with a 73-72 victory over the San Francisco State Gators on Thursday at the Otter Sports Center.

CSUMB picked up their fifth California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory and improved to 11-3 overall.

Senior #Steve Monreal# scored a game-high 23 points, his fifth 20-plus night of the season.  Senior #Jose Sanchez# added 10 points.   In his first appearance in front of the home crowd, junior #Sean Jergo# added nine points, finishing 4-for-4 from the field and connecting on his only free throw chance.  Senior #Joe Mitchell# pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

Junior #Trevor Ray#'s 3-pointer and Mitchell's dunk put the Otters up 11-6 after the Gators made back-to-back 3-pointers.

CSUMB took their largest lead of the half, 18-12, on a layup by Mitchell at 11:51.  SFSU tied the game at 22-22 after a 10-4 run.

After six lead changes and three tied scores, the Gators went on a 10-2 run for a 44-36 lead.  Prior to the end of the first half, the Otters closed the lead to 44-40 on Sanchez's layup and two free throws by junior #Keith Wilson#.

With 14:50 remaining, Monreal knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Otters their first lead of the second half, 52-51.

With the Gators up by five, Monreal hit back-to-back three pointers put the Otters up once again, 64-63, at 7:56.

After both teams showed maximum effort on a loss ball on the floor, the Gators came up with the possession and missed an open 3-pointer.  Sanchez sunk his 3-pointers from the corner to give the Otters a 69-68 lead.  On their next possession, SFSU's Martin Flores drained a jumper from inside the paint, 70-69.

Monreal goes to the line and makes both of his free throws as the Otters retake the lead at 71-70 with 2:14 remaining.

Jergo's layup at 1:33 extended the Otters' lead to 73-70. SFSU's Will Logan scores on a second chance basket, 73-72, with 1:02 remaining.

Strong defense from the Otters in last 30 seconds prevented SFSU from scoring again.

“My hat goes off to San Francisco State tonight, for they are a good team,” said Otters head coach Rob Bishop. “We knew we were in for a fight tonight, and we were able to once again get some big rebounds and timely shots down the stretch.”
