September 26, 2008

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Junior #Grant Robson#'s goal three minutes into overtime propelled the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Stanislaus this afternoon at the Otter Soccer Complex.  The Otters registered their first CCAA victory of the season (1-4-3, 1-2-2 CCAA) as the Warriors dropped to 1-5 (0-4 CCAA).

The Otters took a 1-0 lead at the 18:37 mark. Junior #Nate Torricelli# fired the ball home from close range on a cross by freshman #Beau Villanueva#.

Less than a minute into the second half, the Warriors tied the game with a goal by freshman Andrew Ruiz.  The assist went to senior Matthew Johnson.

Otters had a chance to take the lead at the 68:45 mark.  Torricelli had a breakaway on the left side and crossed it to sophomore #Andy Binol# whose shot sailed over the cross bar.

With three minutes left in regulation, junior goalkeeper #Brenden Baca# punched the ball over the cross bar to prevent a Warrior goal.

Two minutes into the overtime, Torricelli crossed the ball to Robson who crushed the ball into the lower right corner of the goal for a CSUMB victory.

The Otters outshot the Warriors 5-1 in the first half and 13-7 at the end of regulation.

"The team grew today with this win and are hungry for the next game," said head coach Artie Cairel. "The goal was such a great exclamation point to a complete team effort."

CSUMB returns to the field on Sunday, Sept 28 to host No. 17 Chico State. Kick-off is at 2 p.m.
