SEASIDE --- The Otters scored eight runs in the second inning, capped by a three-run homer by #Homa Shafii#, as Cal State Monterey Bay defeated Notre Dame de Namur 10-5 in the final regular season game on Sunday.
Despite the high score, just one earned run was scored during the game. Notre Dame scored five in the first off of starter #Jessica Boyle# as Cierra Keeney and Brian DeLorenzo both hit two-run singles while the Otters committed three errors. Just one of the five was earned.
After Notre Dame took the 5-0 lead, CSUMB came back with eight in the second with the aid of three errors. Shafii hit a three-run shot during the inning and #Alixis Villarin# and #Jill Artoff# hit back-to-back doubles after that. Alma Lopez scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning by stealing home.
#Angela Cabral# (18-8) came in to pitch the fourth and finished 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run to earn the victory. #Noemi Torres# pitched the final two outs. Tara Van Meter (7-14) took the loss, giving up 7 runs, none of them earned, 3 hits and 2 walks in 1 1/3 innings.
With the victory the Otters improve to 34-22 on the season. CSUMB will play Humboldt State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Arcata in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship tournament.
The Otters enter the tourney as the No. 4 seed. Cal State Stanislaus is the No. 2 seed and CSU San Bernardino is the No. 3 seed. The tourney runs through Saturday.
