Softball team sweeps Grand Canyon University

Homa Shafii slides safely into home during the first game Sunday.

Shae Olds has another big day for the Otters

SEASIDE --- #Shae Olds# hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team a 5-3 victory and a sweep of visiting Grand Canyon University on Sunday. The Otters won the opener 9-6.

#Jessica Boyle# (7-7) picked up her third victory of the weekend in the first game, coming in to relieve #Angela Cabral# in the fourth inning and finishing up the game. Cabral left with a 6-4 lead. The Otters scored a run in the first and a run in the second, but the Antelopes scored two in the second and two in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead.

But CSUMB used four hits and two errors by GCU to score four in the bottom of the third to take the lead. When Cabral surrended a single to start the fourth, Boyle came in. GCU would score two off Boyle, but the Otters scored three more in the sixth to seal it.

GCU's Megan Niver (11-12) pitched all six innings and gave up 14 hits and nine runs for the loss. Just three runs were earned. Yasmeen Watkins went 2-2 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs and a homerun.

#Homa Shafii# went 2-4 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored in the first game. #Marisa Trujillo# (2-3) knocked in three runs and #Ashlee Trotter# went 3-4. Olds also collected two hits in the first game, but did her most damage in the second game, going 2-4 with a run and 4 RBIs.

CSUMB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when Olds hit a two-run single after leadoff hitter #Casey Kaufman# scored on an error. Starter #Noemi Torres# (9-6) gave up two runs in the third, but kept her team in front until GCU tied it in the seventh with an RBI-single by Michelle Farrell (3-4) that scored Justine Williams (2-3).

Torres stayed on the mound and finished with 8 IP, 9H, 3R, 3ER, 0 BB, 3K. Farrell (7.1 IP, 9H, 5R, 4 ER) took the loss is now 12-10 on the season.

Alixis Villarin scorched a one-out double to start the threat in the eighth and Olds came up next and pounded one out to right center to win the game. With the two victories the Otters are now 33-22. Grand Canyon is 33-22-1.

For freshman Shae Olds, who entered the weekend hitting .200, it was an amazing weekend. She hit .611 over the six games and drove in 13 runs with 11 hits, four of them home runs. She hit two game-winning hits and had two four-RBI games.

CSUMB has also nearly clinched a spot in the CCAA postseason tournament on May 3 and with a No. 4 regional ranking before the six wins, the Otters can probably plan to play in the regional tournament.
