Otters defeat San Francisco State 4-3, 6-2 in Saturday's doubleheader

SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay beat No.25 San Francisco State 4-3, 6-2 in Saturday's doubleheader at the CSUMB baseball complex, completing a series sweep of SFSU, the first four-game sweep in CSUMB softball history.

“I think back to my first year here when they swept us,” said CSUMB head coach Andrea Kenney, who started with the program in 2006. “It's nice to see our program going places --- and in just our third year.”

#Shae Olds# led the offense for the second day in a row. She knocked in the winning run in the 10th inning for the 4-3 victory in the first game and then hit two homeruns and had 3 RBIs in the second game. She finished the day 3-4 and for the series was 7-10 with 3 homeruns and 8 RBIs. Olds entered the series hitting .200 but Kenney said she had confidence in the freshman.

“She's a great softball player. In the last month she has really showed what she's capable of,” said Kenney. “She's got power. She's going to be a star for us.”

The Gators jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener. SFSU Danielle Chapman hit a solo shot in the first and another in third, both to right field where a powerful wind was blowing. After Chapman's homer in third, Torres gave up a bunt single and then was chased from the game by a double that was blown fair into fair territory down the left field line.

#Jessica Boyle# (6-7) pitched the final 7.1 innings and held the Gators scoreless. SFSU loaded the bases in the top of the 10th with nobody out, but Boyle got out of the jam with a strikeout, a force out at home and a grounder to third to end the threat.

Ashley Jackson pitched the first seven innings for SFSU and allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits. Kendra Wood (10-6) took the loss in relief. She held the Otters scoreless in the eighth and ninth but #Homa Shafii# collected her third hit of the game with a leadoff single in the 10th. #Alixis Villarin# sacrificed her to second and then Olds blasted a line drive to left center and Shafii scored easily.

Olds continued her hot hitting in the second game, putting CSUMB ahead 1-0 in the second inning with a homerun and then increasing the lead to 6-2 with a two-run shot in the fifth. #Rachelle Morales# also had two hits in the game.

#Angela Cabral# (17-8) pitched all seven innings for the victory. She gave up six hits and struck out eight. Vanessa Truan took the loss, pitching the first two innings and giving up two runs on one hit. Kendra Wood pitched the final four innings and gave up five hits and four runs.

CSUMB is now 31-22 overall, 18-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and in sole possession of fourth place. SFSU is 26-22 and 12-16.

The sweep should result in the first national ranking for the softball team. Currently the team is ranked No. 4 in the West Region. Kenney said the quick progress of the program has a lot to do with the excellent support the team gets from the administration at the school.

“When you have the vice president of student affairs (Sue Borrego) here at the games and others in the athletic department, that is really significant,” she said. “We had the president of the school speak before one of our games --- I've never had a president of a school attend one of my games before. That is very special and when there is support like that, special things can happen.”
