Ashlee Trotter is all smiles as she rounds third after Shae Olds hit a two-run homer in the first game of Friday's doubleheader with SFSU.
SEASIDE --- With two out in the 10th inning, Cal State Monterey Bay's #Rachelle Morales# hit a line drive to right center that scored #Noemi Torres# from second base and secured a 4-3 victory and a sweep of the Otters' Friday doubleheader against No. 25 San Francisco State University.
CSUMB beat the Gators 5-2 in the opening game behind the bat of #Shae Olds# (2-4) and the arm of Angela Cabral. Olds hit a two-run homer in the second and a two-run single in the sixth to lead of the offense, while Cabral (16-8) pitched a complete game and allowed two runs on six hits. CSUMB's #Casey Kaufman# also had two hits in the game.
Kendra Wood (6 IP, 7H, 5R, 3ER) took the loss in the first game and is 10-5. Kelsey Wood collected two hits for the Gators and had a run and an RBI to lead the offense.
#Jessica Boyle# (10 IP, 9H, 3R, 2ER) had to work hard for her fifth victory of the season in the second game. Kendra Wood knocked in SFSU's first run in the first inning, but CSUMB's #Jill Artoff# knocked in two for her team in the fourth.
With two out in the top of the seventh, Lea Cardenas smashed a double to right center that scored two Gators runs to give SFSU a 3-2 lead. But SFSU pitcher Ashley Jackson (13-8) couldn't hold the lead. After giving up singles to #Megan Luna# (2-4) and #Homa Shafii# (2-5), she beaned both #Alixis Villarin# and #Erin Tate# to force in the tying run.
But it would be another three innings before CSUMB would be able to bring the winning run home. With the evening getting late and a strong cold wind getting worse, Morales blasted the winning hit for the sweep.
“It was soooo cold,” said Morales after the game. “I don't know that I could have made it much longer out there --- and everybody wanted to go home.”
With the sweep, the Otters are 29-22 and 16-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. SFSU falls to 26-20 and 12-14.
