CSUMB's Jill Artoff throws down the line in game one on Saturday.
SEASIDE --- The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team split their second doubleheader with CSU Dominguez Hills on Saturday, winning 3-2 in the first game and losing 2-4 in the second.
#Angela Cabral# (15-8) picked up the win in the first, while #Jessica Boyle# (4-7) took the loss in the second. The Otters are now 27-22 and 14-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Toros are 23-22 and 12-14 in the CCAA.
The Otters had seven hits in the first game, two by leadoff hitter Casey Kaufman and two by #Homa Shafii#, batting third. But #Rachelle Morales#, batting ninth scored the winning run in the fifth after leading off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. After Kaufman singled to advance her to second and #Megan Luna# sacrificed her to third, #Alixis Villarin# hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score her.
Cabral threw all seven innings in the win and gave up seven hits and two walks. Regina Farfan (12-9) picked up the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings.
Kaufman, Luna, Shafii and Villarin, batting one through fourth, all had a hit in the second game, but other than Morales' two-out single in the second, that was it. Shafii homered in the first to score the first run. Villarin homered to centerfield in the third for the Otters' second run. The Otters left the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh.
Boyle pitched the complete game and gave up just one earned run, four hits and three walks while striking out seven. But the Toros scored an unearned run in the second and two more in the fourth. Kristin Tanaka (7-4) earned the victory, giving up five hits, two walks and two runs.
The Otters are currently ranked No. 5 in the West Region and CSUDH is No. 6. The Otters play six games next weekend, with a doubleheader against San Francisco State on Friday and Saturday and a doubleheader against Grand Canyon University on Sunday.
