SEASIDE --- #Angela Cabral# (14-8) pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Otters to an 8-0 home victory over CSU Dominguez Hills Friday. But the Toros took quick revenge in game two of the doubleheader, scoring three runs off starter #Noemi Torres# (8-6), who took the loss and completed just a third of an inning as the Otters fell 2-4.
The split keeps CSUMB's record an even 13-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 26-20 overall. Dominguez Hills is 21-21 overall and 11-13 in the CCAA.
The Otters scored four in the third, another in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead and invoke the mercy rule, ending the game. #Homa Shafii# and #Ashlee Trotter# both went 3-3 to lead the offense. Shafii knocked in three runs, Trotter two.
#Casey Kaufman# and #Megan Luna#, batting first and second, also sparked the offense; both finished 2-4 and Kaufman scored two runs, Luna one. #Rachelle Morales#, batting eighth, had two RBIs.
It was Cabral's fifth shutout of the season. She walked two batters and struck out none in the short five-inning game.
Unfortunately, the Toros had Torres' number in the second game, hitting three straight singles to start the game and then, after Torres induced a fly ball out, hit another single and a double before #Jessica Boyle# came in to finish the game.
Boyle got out of the jam and allowed just one more run the rest of the way, but CSUMB was only able to score two runs. One in the second inning on an RBI-single to left by Shae Olds, the other in the fifth when #Alixis Villarin# drove in Luna, who had doubled.
The two teams match up again on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon at the CSUMB Softball Complex.
