Softball team splits day and series with San Bernardino

Otters win 6-5, lose 5-1 on second day of play

SAN BERNARDINO — The Otters split another doubleheader with CSU San Bernardino on Saturday, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to win the first game 6-5 and losing the second 5-1. The two teams split their four game series.

Cal State Monterey Bay took an early 3-1 lead but starter #Angela Cabral# struggled in the fifth, giving up four runs before #Noemi Torres# came in to finish. Torres (6-1) went the the rest of the way, striking out three in three innings of work and allowing just three hits.

Down 5-3 in the seventh, #Megan Luna# and #Ashlee Trotter# both singled and #Marisa Trujillo# walked to load the bases. #Rachelle Morales# then doubled to score two runners and the third came home when the throw home sailed to the backstop. Luna and Trotter both went 3-4 with a run and an RBI.

Torres started the second game but was hit hard right away, giving up three runs in the first inning. After running into trouble in the fourth when CSUSB scored two more, Cabral came in and pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit.

But CSUMB's offense couldn't muster a rally. Senior righthander Tawni Baker scattered five hits in a complete-game effort for San Bernardino. Monterey touched Baker for its only run of the game on a leadoff single by #Casey Kaufman#, a bunt single by #Homa Shafii# and an RBI single by Trotter. Torres took the loss and Baker improved to 6-4.

The Otters are now 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Coyotes are 18-14-1 and 9-5.
