SEASIDE --- #Angela Cabral# pitched her second shutout in a row to make sure Cal State Monterey Bay earned a split with Western Oregon in the two teams' doubleheader at the CSUMB baseball/softball complex Wednesday.
Western Oregon (12-9) defeated CSUMB 5-1 in the first game before Cabral (10-6) silenced the Wolves' offense, allowing just five hits over seven innings. She struck out four and walked three in the 2-0 victory. Cabral has allowed just two runs in her last 22 innings. Her last outing was a 2-0 shutout against Humboldt State on March 21.
Western Oregon scored five runs against starter #Jessica Boyle# (2-6) in the first game. Boyle gave way to freshman #Noemi Torres# with one out in the fifth inning after a three-run homer by Trina Dorn. Torres struck out seven of the remaining eight batters for Western Oregon, but it was Amanda Fleer (7-2) who earned the victory, pitching a complete game for the Wolves and giving up just the one run on three hits.
Cabral and Western Oregon starter Christina Cooke (2-6) were locked in a pitchers' duel in the second game. The game was still scoreless in the bottom of the sixth when #Homa Shafii# singled up the middle with one out. #Alixis Villarin# then hit a fly ball that resulted in a three-base error by the centerfielder and a run by Shafii. #Marisa Trujillo# later singled to knock in Villarin.
The Wolves rallied with two out in the seventh. Cabral walked a batter and gave up two singles, but when Tyler Sutherland hit that second single to rightfield, Shafii picked up the ball and threw out Melissa Powell, who was trying to score from second, at the plate for the final out.
CSUMB (19-17) is now ranked No. 9 in the Western Region. The rankings are dominated by the California Collegiate Athletic Association; rivals Humboldt State are ranked first, UC San Diego third, CSU Dominguez Hills fifth, San Francisco State sixth and Cal State Stanislaus is seventh.
