SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay dropped lost a pair of one-run games to visiting Humboldt State Friday, matching the Lumberjacks hit for hit but falling 2-1 and 3-2 at the CSUMB softball complex.
Lizzy Prescott (8IP, 1ER) outlasted #Angela Cabral# (8IP, 2ER) in the opener. Cabral gave up three singles in the extra frame, the third by Lindsay Warren, which scored Marissa Slattery for the winning run. Prescott (20-5) struck out nine and walked one and got the win; Cabral (8-6) struck out two and walked three in a tough loss.
Cabral (8-6) pitched her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, giving up just one run on a sacrifice fly by Francesca West that tied it at 1. The Otters got on the board in the second inning with an #Alixis Villarin# RBI-double that scored #Alma Lopez#. Despite the low 2-1 score, both teams had eight hits. Villarin and #Megan Luna# both went two for three to lead CSUMB and Slattery had two hits for HSU.
The Otters started the second game with two runs in the first inning off starter Hannah Jones. Leadoff batter #Casey Kaufman# singled to center, Luna was hit by a pitch and #Homa Shafii# then drove in the first run with another single to center. Villarin drove the second run in with a sac fly to deep centerfield.
But CSUMB (17-15 overall, 9-9 in the CCAA) would not score again and HSU was able to get to freshman starter #Noemi Torres# (4.2IP, 7H, 3ER) with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, when, after striking out the first batter, she gave up a single and two doubles before being replaced by Jessica Boyle.
Boyle pitched the final 2 1/3 innings without giving up a run, but when #Marissa Trujillo# doubled and CSUMB's offense threatened in the sixth, Jones (4-3), who earned the victory, was replaced by Prescott and she pitched the last 1 2/3 innings to pick up her second save of the season for HSU (24-11, 10-4).
The 18 hits in the second game were split evenly between the clubs. Slattery and Nikki Ketteringham both had two hits for HSU and #Homa Shafii#, #Ashlee Trotter# and #Jill Artoff# all had two hits for CSUMB. The two teams play again Saturday with the first game to begin at 11 a.m.
