SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay split its doubleheader with visiting Humboldt State on Thursday as both teams had starting pitchers throw three-hit shutouts. HSU won 6-0 behind Lizzy Prescott (19-5) and CSUMB came back with 1-0 victory with veteran #Jessica Boyle# on the mound.
Prescott, the 2007 NCAA West Region pitcher of the year, struck out 12 batters en route to her seventh shutout this season and 16th complete game. #Angela Cabral# (8-4) started the opener for the Otters, but HSU chased her out after scoring four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Caitlin Krug started and ended the momentous inning as HSU batted through the lineup. Krug led off with a single and after Marissa Slattery (4-4, 3RBI) hit her home with an RBI-double, Ashley Oltjenbruns knocked in a run and Francesca West drove in two more with a single to right, Krug finally came up again with two outs and grounded out.
Boyle came in to finish the game and threw two scoreless innings, but CSUMB's bats remained silent against Prescott. Boyle had one of the three Otter hits in the first game.
The Otters' offense wouldn't fare much better in the second game against Hannah Jones, but Boyle (2-4) didn't allow a run in her complete-game effort and when #Marissa Trujillo# knocked in #Megan Luna# in the first inning, it would be all CSUMB needed to win.
Jones (3-2) pitched six innings, allowed five hits, two walks and struck out five. Boyle struck out two and walked one. HSU's Natalie Galletly (2-3) was the only player on either side to collect more than one hit.
The two teams play another doubleheader at the Otter Softball Complex on Friday starting at 1 p.m. Humboldt is now 22-11 overall and CSUMB is 17-13. The next four games are conference games; HSU is 8-4 and leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association and CSUMB is 9-7 and in fourth.
