CSUMB starts season 3-1; tournament rained out

TURLOCK, Calif. --- Freshman #Noemi Torres# allowed just one run in a complete-game effort to lead Cal State Monterey  Bay to 2-1 victory over CSU San Bernardino on Saturday, the team's third win in its first four games. The Otters were at CSU Stanislaus competing in the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational.

For Torres, who pitched for Watsonville High School last year, it was her second win in her first two days of college competition and she was outstanding. She allowed just four hits, walked just one batter and struck out four.

“She has a lot of composure for a freshman,” said CSUMB coach Andrea Kenney.

Leadoff hitter #Casey Kaufman# led the offense, going 2-4 with a run. #Megan Luna# and #Homa Shafii# knocked in the two batters.

Friday evening, Torres picked up her first win, throwing five shutout innings against San Francisco State University in a 9-0 victory. Boyle threw the final two innings in relief. #Ashlee Trotter# led the offense, going 2-3 with three RBIs and a homerun.

Earlier Saturday, the Otters lost to Seattle 10-3. Kaufman went 2-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the offense, which wasn't nearly enough. Seattle University's Megan MacIsaac was 2-3 with a triple and four RBIs. #Angela Cabral#, who pitched in the Otters first victory, gave up three runs in the first third of the first inning before being lifted for #Jessica Boyle#, who gave up five more runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Otters finished the tournament with a record of 3-1. Sunday's games were rained out and Seattle University (4-0 at the tournament) was declared the tourney's champion. UC San Diego also finished 4-0, but Seattle was declared the victor based on a tie-breaking system of runs allowed and scored.
