CHICO --- The Otters split a doubleheader with Chico State on Friday, winning the first game in eight innings 6-5 and losing the second 2-1 in a pitchers' duel.
#Noemi Torres# pitched six strong innings and gave up two runs to start the first game. An RBI-single by# Ashlee Trotter# in the first inning started the Otters' offense. They took the lead in the third with two runs scored through a hit batter, two singles and an error.
CSUMB (11-8 overall, 6-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) manufactured another run in the top of the sixth and led 5-2 when Torres, a freshman from Watsonville, gave way to #Jessica Boyle#. But Boyle gave up three runs on five hits in the seventh and the game went into extra innings.
#Jill Artoff# led off the Otters' eighth with a single to centerfield. #Jennifer Farmer# came in to run for Artoff and would score on an error by Chico's catcher. Boyle found her groove in the bottom of the inning and quickly dispatched three straight batters on flies and pop outs.
Chico State's Lauren Walker and CSUMB's #Angela Cabral# both pitched the distance in the second game with Walker (7 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 ER) coming out on top over Cabral (6 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 ER). Chico's Chelsea Lundberg hit a 2 RBI-single in the third.
The Otters' lone run was in the fifth inning. Erin Tate was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third when #Casey Kaufman# singled. Then, Tate stole home while Kaufman stole second. CSUMB had loaded the bases with one out in the fourth but failed to score. Kaufman finished with two hits in the game. #Homa Shafii# and #Marisa Trujillo# each had one.
Chico State (8-10, 3-5) and CSUMB play another doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
