Otters finish four-game series CSU Stanislaus 2-2

SEASIDE --- CSU Stanislaus evened a four-game series with Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader 2-0, 6-2, a day after losing two itself.

The Otters' Jessica Boyle took the loss in the first game, despite giving up just two hits and striking out nine in a complete-game effort. Both hits came in the sixth inning, the second one a line drive to centerfield by Alyssa Guzman that scored the only earned run Boyle gave up.

The Otters (had six hits in the game, but couldn't string them together. Megan Luna led off the fourth inning with a double, but was stranded there. Marisa Trujillo started the third inning with a single, but was doubled off on a pop-up bunt by Alexis Villarin. Then Casey Kaufman singled --- only to be called out a few pitches later for leaving the base early on a stolen base attempt.

Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a complete game for the victory and struck out four and walked one.

After throwing 8 and 2/3 innings on Friday, Angela Cabral didn't appear to have much left on Saturday, as she gave up five runs and picked up just four outs before being lifted for Noemi Torres. Torres allowed just one more the rest of the way but the Otters couldn't score enough runs to overcome the four-run first inning by the Warriors.

Jessica Scholl did a lot of the damage for CSUS (5-9 overall) with a two-run single in the first and solo homerun in the sixth. Shea Olds hit solo homerun for CSUMB and Rachelle Morales was 2-3.

The CSUMB softball team (10-7 overall) will play its next seven games on the road, many of them in Chico. The team is home again to play Humboldt State University on March 20.
