REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay finished fourth, one point ahead of Cal Berkeley at the North Points 3 regatta on Saturday. Stanford, which placed second to Cal Maritime, hosted the event at Redwood Creek in Redwood City.
CSUMB coach Frank Degnan said the wind was light and shifty throughout the day making the racing tricky and technical. The top five teams overall in the five regattas will compete in the conference championship regatta and Degnan said this fourth-place finish was important.
“At this point, with three regattas completed out of five for the series, we control our own destiny as far as qualifying for the conference championship regatta,” he said.
Skipper Bard Schoch and crew Rachel Donner, in the Co-ed Varsity B Fleet, finished second, third, third and second out of 12 boats. With 10 points, they placed second in the B Fleet. In the second race, they managed to still place second after crossing the starting line early, forcing them to restart at the back of the fleet.
CSUMB's next regatta is at UC Santa Cruz on Feb. 23.
