Danielle Walker and Beth Wehman compete on Sunday.
MONTEREY --- Cal State Monterey Bay's sailing team finished fourth on both Saturday and Sunday as it hosted the Pacific Coast Collegiate Conference North Points 1 and 2 Sailing Regatta this weekend on Monterey Bay.
A total of 12 boats from six schools took to the water to participate in the regatta. CSUMB Head sailing coach Frank Degnan said his team was able to take advantage of local knowledge and ideal sailing conditions and started the season well with solid fourth-place finishes on both Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, sailing in the Co-Ed Varsity A Division, skippers Greg Cannon, Clark Hardenbergh and Brad Schoch, along with crew Brandon Wehman and Eric Zawolkow, turned in a consistent performance finishing ahead of Cal Berkeley and cross bay rival UC Santa Cruz. The top three finishers on Saturday were Santa Clara University, Cal Maritime and Stanford.
On Sunday it was the CSUMB women's team leading the way for the Otters with another fourth-place finish. In the A fleet, skipper Dani Walker with crew Beth Wehman turned in a consistent performance with three fourth-place finishes. Sunday's highlight came from B fleet skipper Haley Pikhart and crew Kelsy Panno. Pikhart and Panno capitalized on three fourth-place finishes as well as one third-place finish. Pikhart's and Panno's total of 28 points placed them ahead of Stanford, Cal and UC Santa Cruz. First place in the B fleet was claimed by Cal Maritime, with second going to Santa Clara University.
Coming off the opening weekend of the season, Degnan said the Otters look solid to continue their streak of qualifying for the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Championships.
