SEASIDE --- The Lady Otters gave the 12th-ranked Div. II basketball team in the nation a scare Saturday night, falling to visiting Chico State 73-67 at the Otter Sports Center.
Point guard #Alma Lopez# scored 21 points, made nine steals and had two assists to lead Cal State Monterey Bay, but it was not enough to overcome Audriana Spencer's 23 points on 10 of 14 shooting, and a 39-28 rebounding edge by the Wildcats. Chico's Renee Goldoff came off the bench to grab 10 boards. It was the sixth victory in a row for Chico.
“She (Lopez) had a good game. She led us very well,” said CSUMB head coach Amber Magner. “It's not entirely her fault, but we need more assists out of her.”
The Otters shot just 34.4 percent, compared to 46.3 percent for the Wildcats. #Dana Andrews# was 5 of 23 from the field, #Britnea Moore# one of seven and #Sabrina Jenkins# one of five. Lopez nailed eight of 16.
“We did play pretty well, we just didn't shoot well,” said Magner. “That's a nationally-ranked team and if you can't knock down your shots, you can't win the game.”
The Otters led 21-20 late in the first half and trailed 23-27 at the break. Chico was able to increase that lead to 16 with five minutes left in the game, but CSUMB rallied and the Wildcats started missing free throws. With 44 seconds left, the Otters were just down 69-63 and had the ball, but could not get any closer. At the 30-second mark Andrews tried to draw contact on her three-point attempt and failed to get the call or hit the rim. Free throws by Chico's Tyler Lydon and Sam Oelsner sealed the game as the clock wound down.
The Otters are on the road this weekend with a game against Humboldt State on Friday and Sonoma State on Saturday.
